Who else here is watching The Chosen? I’m sorry, but I can’t help but rave about this show! If you’re like me and almost solely watch historical dramas, you have to start watching this show if you haven’t already. Plus, it’s about Jesus so of course I’m hooked.
What is The Chosen?
Like I said, this show is a historical drama about the ministry of Jesus. It is literally the first EVER multi-series tv show about the life of Jesus as told by those he impacted. The director, Dallas Jenkins, is absolutely amazing. He has brought to life the most beautiful stories of Jesus’ life direct from the Bible. After season 1, I was immediately ready to go for season 2, so now that it’s here I am beyond thrilled!! If you missed season 1 or can’t remember what happened, here’s a quick recap.
Season One Recap
The first episode starts with Jesus freeing Mary Magdalene from the seven demons within her. Yeah, powerful stuff for the first episode. The last moment where Jesus calls her by name and frees her had me seriously ugly crying.
The overarching story of season 1 is simply the beginning of Jesus’ ministry. It begins as he gathers his disciples and ends with Jesus revealing himself to be the Messiah to a Samaritan woman at a well. He asks her to tell others about him making her the first to spread the news that the Messiah has come (again, another HUGE tear jerker).
They also have episodes on the story of Nicodemus, the Pharisee, going to speak with Jesus in the dead of night to see who this man is who’s doing all these amazing miracles. One of my favorite episodes is the wedding where Jesus performs his first miracle of turning water into wine.
I adored seeing what Jesus possibly was like in a casual atmosphere simply celebrating with his friends. I feel like most representations of Jesus in film paint him as a very serious and dry person, but we know that he was much more than that. In The Chosen, they show him as being so joyful and loving and even throw in some incredible moments of humor that really show the friendly dynamic he had with his disciples. Honestly, I don’t think a show has ever made me cry and laugh so much in one sitting.
Every episode makes you feel completely immersed in the time period and provides incredible personality, character development, and background to each disciple. You truly get to see the different personalities and individuality of them come to life.
Who is The Chosen For?
Genuinely, if you like historical dramas, you will love this show. When first watching it, I thought well, I’m definitely going to like it because it’s about Jesus. But, the more I watched it, I was like, dang, this is just flat-out a well-done show. The cinematography is gorgeous, the writing is so fluid and not at all awkward or clunky, and they truly just let the beauty of the Gospel and Jesus shine. It never feels like they are trying to overly play-up Christianity or make it super educational. They simply show the life of Jesus and the power and beauty of his time here one earth.
Season 2 is OUT
As of Easter, season 2 is officially out! No surprise here, but so far, it is absolutely holding up to the hype. By the first episode, I was already crying again! I don’t want to spoil too much, but I fully expect more tear-worthy miracles, powerful teachings, and hilarious takes.
All I can say is, whether you’re a Christian or not, it is so worth watching. Oh, and did I mention it’s totally free to watch?! All you have to do is download the app and watch for free!! They have such an incredible system where people on the app can “pay it forward” and, in a sense, donate to pay for another person to watch an episode. I’ve even seen messages while watching that say “your episode was paid for by so-and-so”. Of course, it’s never required to donate, but it is definitely a cool way to bless others who watch and also personally support the show.
They have 8 episodes planned for this season and just released episode 5 this week. From what I understand, the episodes are edited as they go and releases as fast as possible, usually once a week. Once in a while, there is a surprise release. A few weeks ago, I freaked out because they released episode 3 immediately after episode 2.
As you can tell, I can’t say enough good things about this show and my experience watching it. If you’d like to see what all the hype is about and enjoy the show with me, you can click HERE to download the app. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have!
