Positive Self Talk

This topic is something I have been stewing on for the past few weeks.  A lot of it stems from stuff I am personally/inwardly dealing with. I feel like sometimes it is hard to formulate words around emotions and struggles. I am however realizing how powerful and life altering the words we speak truly are.  There is that saying “Words Create Worlds.”  I believe this whole heartedly.

I have spent the past 5-6 years complaining about my appearance.  I have been focusing on the fact that I have gained 30-40 pounds due to a series of circumstances (more to come on this in the next few weeks), a lot of it being shock and the other part wanting immediate change and results. The sad part is that when I was “smaller” I still was not happy and spoke negatively about myself. I decided this year to shift how I speak about myself and my weight.  Instead of saying “I’ve gotten so fat.” or “I wish I was as small as you.”  I am saying things like “This is my year.”  For me, my negative self talk has been focused on physical appearance, but we all struggle with something we don’t like about ourselves.  I have been recently challenged to ask myself these questions, “What am I saying to myself” and “What am I saying about myself.” What we say matters.  I am reminded of the scripture that says “Words can bring death or life! Talk too much, and you will eat everything you say.” Prov. 18:21 Of course what we say is an overflow of what is in our hearts and in our minds… I have been digging deep to find ways to shift thoughts and check my heart.

This is my year.  If there is something in your life, that you can change, that you don’t like, then you have the power to do something about it and should.  There are changes I am currently making that will shift the way I see myself and the way I think. In the meantime it is SO important to speak life and not death but also check myself constantly about what I am thinking.  Sometimes we also have to speak things that are not as though they were, in order to build up our faith to believe for change. Put signs up, write it down on paper, do whatever it takes to create a world around you that is positive, starting with the words you speak and read over yourself.  What we believe and say we become.  We can do better and be better. Lets start together, today.

    Beautiful words! I have decided 2018 is my year also. Instead of being a fat cow I am going to be under 300 by my spring Doctors appointment. Instead of being in a hopeless situation I am going to change it ever so slightly each quarter. I have lived 54 years of negativity and I’m over it. Thanks for the encouragement and words of wisdom.     Such a great post. Words really are so powerful. What we speak and continue to speak will speak life into those words. I was recently talking to a friend about this very thing. My husband and I are really trying to figure out how to take a trip for our 20th anniversary, but baby sitters aren’t looking to promising. My friend told me to start talking as we are going on and believing it will come true. So that’s what I’m going to do. 🙂
