Coffee Date Vol. 10: 5 Dream Killers To Watch Out For (Dare To Dream Series)

January 22, 2018 By Ruthie Ridley 124 Comments

How is everyone’s week going so far?!! I wanted to take a minute and thank everyone that has been following along with our Dare To Dream series so far.  It has been a really inspiring few weeks! If you missed the past few posts, you can catch Nakeia’s story here and Claudia’s story here.  Both are different but so impactful.  I have been so challenged by both of these women.  I wanted to jump in here this week and share a few of my own little nuggets on dreaming.

Dreams can be big or small, whatever the caliber, they require faith, action, wisdom and strategy.  In wanting to execute your dreams there are a few pitfalls or “dream killers” to watch out for.  The ones that stand out to me the most are: Negativity, Fear, Procrastination, Your Past & Lack Of Support.

Negativity: There’s a scripture in the Bible that says: “Do not give dogs what is sacred; do not throw your pearls to pigs. If you do, they may trample them under their feet, and turn and tear you to pieces.” In other words, don’t share your precious dreams with people that don’t care and don’t have your best interest at heart.  Being around negativity will literally suck the life out of you.  Limit the negative influences in your life.  Eliminate them if you have to.  Positive vibes only!! It really makes a difference in how you perform.

Fear: When I was getting ready to start this blog 3 years ago, fear gripped me for months leading up to the official launch.  Fear of Failure, fear of what people would think of me, fear in general was all consuming.  I took the leap in January 2015 and I took it scared.  I think fear is a natural part of the process, especially when you are sharing something personal.  Putting a piece of you out there that can be up for people to judge, question and criticize, but move forward anyway.  I think the biggest way to overcome fear is to do what you are afraid of.  Surround yourself with cheerleaders that believe in you and push you to take the leap.

Procrastination: A lot of times we want to wait till everything is just right before we get started on a big project.  Obviously there are key components needed to jumpstart your project, dream or goal but often times you have to work with what you have until you get what you need.  This takes time.  The longer you put off plans and procrastinate, the more apt you are to never get started.  Procrastination cannot be an option while pursing your dreams and goals.  Do one thing everything day that leads you toward that goal even if it is something small, and sometimes that one thing is actually rest.

Your Past: Prior to this blog I had 2 blogs that completely failed.  Lack of direction and experience got the best of me.  When I was getting ready to launch all I could think about was the failure in my past with blogging.  If I had let this define me, I would have never gotten started and experience the future success that this blog would bring.  Don’t let your past define you or paralyze you.  Your past is your past, your future has not yet been written! Anything can happen.

Lack Of Support: I had mentioned this a little earlier, but it is extremely crucial to spend time with people that believe in you, cheer you on and support your endeavors! Find supportive, like-minded individuals that get you and understand what you are going after.  For me, a blogging community is very important.  Its is fuel and encouragement.  Find your tribe and love them hard.  There is nothing like support when pursuing a dream, it isn’t optional for your success.

That’s my two sense for this series!! Thank you as always for reading! Be sure to stop by next week to hear from Angelle of Dashing Darlin’! She is one of my blogger besties! We have been supporting each other from the beginning! Have an amazing week everyone!!

Seriously love this post! I think support is one of the biggest things that can help or hurt you. I am so thankful for the unending support I get from my family, friends and other bloggers! I wouldn’t have stuck around this long without it!

This was a fantastic post, and it really hit home. I used to be friends with a couple of the most negative people I had ever met. After a couple of years of them making fun of things I wanted to do, places I wanted to see, and just everything in general, I wrote them both a long letter explaining how I just couldn’t be friends with them anymore. My life got better once I kicked them to the curb.

Surrounding yourself with like-minded, open people is the best thing you can do…and one of the best ways to learn to. GREAT post!

One of the things I most admire about my sister is her positivity. And I’m finding that less woes seem to fall her way. Now I don’t think the universe is sparing her from anything. Just her outlook is so upbeat things don’t seem to be that big of a deal.

WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MIRACLES YOU HAVE EVER WHAT IS ONE OF THE BIGGEST MIRACLES YOU HAVE EVER WITNESSED GOD DO IN YOUR LIFE?!✨🫶🏾🕊️❤️‍🔥🙌🏾🙏🏾🤍

I’ll go first!! Earlier this week I was just thinking about how faithful God has been to me over the years! I think we all go through different highs and lows, but it’s so good to stop and look back and remember what God has done!

Back in 2008 when Ben and I just got married, the market had crashed. I had purchased a home on my own in CT- We lost the house and our cars were repossessed - I honestly felt like we would never recover from that!!! Not to mention, I felt so much failure and shame attached to that season!

Fast-forward to 2019, we begin working with our dear friend @cody.d.williams on purchasing our very first home together and he told us all the work that needed to be done with our credit, etc. we took a year and did everything we could to get things right! Not only were we able to purchase our first home together in 2019, but everything from the past was no longer a factor & two years later we were able to purchase an even more magnificent property that we now call home 🏡

Why was this a miracle for me? I think because I thought we would always be behind & nothing would ever change. We rented for 7+ years before we were able to purchase a home as a married couple and that started to discourage me!

Just a reminder that little miracles happen everyday and that your worst is never the worst. God can turn your situation around in a moment!!! The BEST is yet to COME!!! Keep believing ⭐️

Earlier this week, I had the privilege of spending Earlier this week, I had the privilege of spending some quality time with other incredible creators at a retreat with @parkermanagement 🤍 It really felt like a retreat for my soul ✨Napa is also reallly good at forcing you to slow down and take in the gorgeous views 😌

Spending time with these wonderful humans this week reminded me that I still belong here, even though I might not look like everyone else (or feel like I fit in) that’s the beauty of it all right?

I think after doing something for a very long time and in this space specifically, it’s easy to feel imposter syndrome, self doubt and the inability to “keep up”. Although an app or an industry has changed over time it’s so important to stay true to yourself.

So grateful for this time away & I’m leaving with my cup overflowing! God is always on time with these types of things. Just when we need another boost or some encouragement, He sends all the right people your away! He is just good like that 🤩
