With the unexpected down times that have come as a byproduct of this year, I’ve found that reading books has been a new joy of mine! Mostly during any quiet times, but even listening to them on the go!!
As I continued to pick of different books, I slowly realized that many of my friend and family have not only picked up the same past-time, but have started reading the same books!! Connecting with old and new friends over these books has slowly developed into something of an informal book club!!! With that all being said, I thought I would extend the invite to all of you and share some of my favorite books!!
This book definitely took me by surprise!! It follows a young girl named Kya who lives in the marshes outside a small village on the coast of North Carolina! She’s quite an unkempt girl and is considered to be an outcast! The story follows her struggles as she becomes a suspect when the body of local hotshot, Chase Andrews, is found in the marshes!!! If you enjoy crime drama books, you are definitely going to like this one!!
Ladies! You have to read this book!! This self-help book by Rachel Hollis breaks down all the lies that we, as women, are accustomed to believing and beautifully dictates how we are able to destroy these lies and face the world with confidence in ourselves! It’s such a powerful read!!
To all my fellow parents, this book has helped me so much in learning and growing in how I parent my kids!! Author and Pastor Bill Johnson shares beautiful wisdom, kingdom concepts, and practical tools in how to parent your kids to their uniqueness, gifts, and strengths, along with how you can demonstrate and reveal who God is to them!!!
For those of you who enjoy a more analytical read, this book documents Daniel Coyle’s psychological and sociological studies of the best groups of people in different fields of life (i.e., military, education, entertainment, etc.)!! He finds that there are three basic “ingredients” to their success and goes on to describe them as “codes” of our culture! It is absolutely fascinating and such an intriguing study!!
This book is a tear-jerker!! It follows the family of a man who has just returned from war with PTSD, his wife, and their daughter, Leni as they move from Seattle to Alaska!! As they settle in Alaska, their family life worsens and the father’s abuse towards his wife increases!!! As their family tries to create a better life, Leni finds companionship with a young boy who also suffers from a dysfunctional family! You may not cry, but it is so well written you can’t help but get emotional!!
This book follows a former priest named Cullen Post who works for an organization called Guardian Ministries!! Their job is to assess court transcripts and personal letters of inmates who have possibly been wrongfully imprisoned!! If they feel that, without a doubt, a client is wrongfully imprisoned they will go through any means necessary to free an innocent man!!!
This book is a memoir of the author, Tara Westover’s, escape from violence and toxic relationships!!! It goes through Tara’s childhood in a very religious household with many rules that keep her from being independent!! As she gets older, she begins to pursue an education to free and better herself!! This book is a beautiful portrayal of making possible what seems to be impossible!!!
This book is based on the real life con and downfall of Theranos!! In 2014, Theranos was developed to revolutionize blood testing to make it faster and more efficient. The only problem was, it didn’t work!! The simple fact that this book is based on a real life event makes it even that more riveting to read!!
If you haven’t read this book, I’m positive you’ve at least heard of it!! Michelle Obama’s memoir follows her entire life going all the way back to her roots, through her time in the White House, developing her health campaigns and raising her kids!!! You truly get to see through her eyes!!
I hope this encouraged you to not only join my informal book club, but to try something new, whether that’s reading a new book, trying a new craft, etc.!! If you do choose to read any of these or you’ve already read them, please let me know!! I’d love to hear your all your thoughts!!!
