Fashion Art + Giveaway

I am so excited to introduce you to a phenomenal fashion artist that I have gotten to know over the past year and a half! Parissa is a remarkable, educated woman who decided to embark upon the journey of business ownership! Take a few moments to read below and be inspired by culture and leaps of faith.

1) When did you start illustrating artistic pieces?
Painting and drawing have always been passions of mine; however, after graduating from college, I moved to Singapore and embarked on a marketing and event management career. I enjoyed learning about business and strategy, but I itched for a creative outlet. Prior to the move, I mostly painted large oil portraits and landscapes. I wanted to start painting again but there was no way I could fit an easel in my tiny apartment. So, I took up drawing—I brought my sketchbook everywhere with me and sketched anytime I had the chance. My favorite thing to do when I took the subway to work was to sketch the fashionable girls I saw around me. Fashion is a very big scene in Asia and I remember being in complete awe of the bold fashion choices young girls make. That’s when I became obsessed with fashion illustration and I enrolled in a fashion illustration class at an art college near my office. The class taught me the basics of the fashion figure, but it took me a few years to develop my own unique artistic style

2) What inspires you as you create? Where do you draw from for inspiration?

I spend a lot of time looking at vintage images—something about the romance and femininity in the way the women posed back then that really inspires me. I also think about the women I grew up surrounded by– my mother, my grandmother, my aunts. They all had their own unique beauty regimen, and when they were done, they looked absolutely beautiful. It’s that air of confidence that they walked out with that really inspires me. I can’t quite describe what that looks like, but I try to evoke that in my illustrations. In the way that the illustrations pose and the way that they look, I want them to say, “I take time for myself and I know I’m beautiful”.
I also love looking at Chinese calligraphy for inspiration. I think that the bold and expressive ink strokes evoke so much passion and emotion. My artistic style is definitely inspired by Chinese calligraphy and watercolor. It’s funny because I grew up in Hong Kong and Chinese calligraphy was my first introduction to any form of art (I think when I was just 6 years old)!

3) Who is your favorite artist?

I have so many it’s hard to choose! My favorites are John William Waterhouse, John Singer Sargent and Alphonse Mucha.

How cute is this!?!

4) When did you start your etsy shop and how did you gather courage to get it going?

I opened the shop in 2015, and I wish I did it sooner! I always had a love for creating art, but I was never surrounded by anyone who made a career or living out of it. I thought art would just be a hobby. When I started working, I missed art so much, and after learning about the success other people have had with Etsy, I thought why not try it? When I moved back to the U.S. with my boyfriend (now husband), I thought, this is the perfect time to give myself the chance to do something I love. It was hard at first, but when I got that first customer who loved my art and wanted me to create a custom illustration for her blog– it was one of the best feelings!

5) If money and time were not an issue, what would you do? What is your biggest life dream!?

I would love to travel the world and paint everything that inspires me. I have to say my biggest life dream is to build a family and turn my biggest passion into a career. I’m not there yet but hopefully I will be!
