It wouldn’t be Easter without our annual family photoshoot. We are definitely a photoshoot kind of family. As a mom, it’s one of my absolute favorite things to do. Getting everyone dressed up and making a day of it is always so fun for our family. It definitely wasn’t always that way though. Coordinating and getting everyone ready to go can be pretty exhausting, especially when the kids were younger. So, here’s a few tips and tricks I’ve learned over the years on how to have a great family photoshoot.
PLAN AHEAD
This may sound like a given, but I can’t stress it enough!! You want to make sure everything is set to go the day before your shoot. This includes everything from clothes being laid out, making sure your camera has enough storage (if you’re the one taking them), your meals are prepped, etc. Getting this done the day before drastically decreases any stress the day of.
PICK YOUR LOCATION
Of course you want to know where you’re going ahead of time, but your location greatly affects the end result of your shot. Outside locations are usually our go-to. The lighting is always so much more natural and beautiful. Speaking of which…
CHOOSE YOUR TIME OF DAY WISELY
In my opinion, lighting is what makes a good photo. You typically want to do your photoshoot either really early in the morning or when the sun is going down. This makes it so you don’t have any unwanted shadows and just objectively gives you the best lighting for your pictures.
BE YOURSELVES
This might just be a personal preference, but I think we can all agree that the best photos are the ones of you and your family just having fun together. Just simply laughing in a picture makes for such a sweet moment to look back on instead of a super posed picture. It also helps to just take a TON of pictures. It’s always better to have too many than too little to choose from.
These family photoshoots have grown more and more special to me over the years. Of course I love having cute, stylized pictures of the family, but, over the years, it’s turned into my own little time capsule of memories. I look back at so many of these photoshoots and can see my babies growing up and see how our family has grown so much throughout the years. You may not be the type of family that goes ALL OUT for these kinds of things, but I would definitely encourage you to give it a try because these types of pictures are the ones you keep for the rest of your life.
