This year it was a serious goal of mine to read one book per month.  I realized toward the end of 2016 I was not doing enough for myself in the area of growth and self-care, mentally and spiritually.  I felt very drained and depleted, mostly because I was giving out of an “empty cup” so to speak! I have made a conscious effort this year to make reading, learning and growing  an absolute priority.  This is not just for my personal gain but also for my family, close friends and even my lovely readers such as your self.  I met this goal in January and completed The Best Yes by Lysa Terkeurst.

This book was exactly what I needed to start off the year!

If you are anything like me, wanting to please people, wanting to make everyone happy, don’t want to cause any disappointment or ruffle any feathers, then this book is for you. Lysa goes through the process of decision making and counting the cost of what you decided, so well.  She highlights the fact that the decisions you make today don’t just affect the present but also your future.    I seriously want to read this book again just to make sure that the facts stick with me for a life time.  It was so good and really centered around wisdom.  I found so much freedom in every single chapter.

Here are a few Best Yes nuggets I came away with:

  • Before you say yes, evaluate the following-
* Ability
* Time
* Expectations
* Are you saying yes in order to please others
* Are your finances being affected negatively

  *The small “no”:  Don’t delay your “no” if you know your answer is “no!”
A decision is like a beautiful river once your in it, it is hard to change directions.
* Are you a yes girl or a best YES girl?!
* Don’t let the awkward disappointment of others keep us from our best yes with God.

 Here is an excerpt from the book that I think sums up her writing and wisdom really well:
Learn to find and play the role God wants most for you to play, not the ones you feel pressured into playing for the sake of others or even our sense of accomplishment and worth. Most of us spend a lot of our lives figuring out when to say yes and when to say no. How to manage our time, reduce stress, do our best for our families, find a little space for “me”. But we don’t find space for our souls until we learn to step past the yes and no of daily decisions and seek a third option: the best yes. The best yes is the choice that shapes all our other choices. It’s what allows us to play our necessary parts in God’s plan, to spend our energy and focus our passion on the assignments that really are ours.
How do we learn to say that best yes? It requires honesty. Imagination. Attention. Trust. Humility. Practice – lots of practice. And wisdom. The best yes is really all about wisdom – learning to make truly wise decisions. And that’s the heart of this book. “I want us to become powerfully effective decision makers,” writes Lysa Terkeurst. “Because then we will live powerfully effective lives. And spend our souls doing powerfully effective work to the glory of God.” With her signature mix of transparency, Scripture-laced insight, and “been there” humor, she suggests usable strategies for choosing wisely and encourages us all to shout and whisper our own best yes to life, day by decision-making day.”

Is that not amazing and powerful all at once?! I highly recommend this book!! I am feeling really empowered and more free than ever as I continue to move forward in 2017!

    I know one author stated that it is best to say no and leave it that. If you provide an excuse people are easy to dismiss it or try to force you to change your mind. I love the you outfit and the tips you gave about being a yes person because this is something I am overcoming.

    Yes, people pleasing is a very hard habit to break! It’s when you dig deep and find out what’s best for you, and then the people pleasing doesn’t seem to matter much. It’s definitely a way of re-wiring your brain to think, but the outcome of less pressure is so much better!

    You’re slaying in this tunic! I’ll have to check it this book. I’m a recovering people-pleaser, and I’m learning to say no (and not aplogizing or justifying!). It’s hard sometimes. But it helps to think of saying no as giving the best yes to something else! We can’t do it all. W just need to go with God, follow His Spirit, and not feel bad that something isn’t for us. I recently let go of a couple things, and it brought so much peace and freedom.
