5 Styling Tips For Your Next Family Photo Shoot: Make sure that everyone feels comfortable in what they are wearing. You can also start by getting inspiration online or even looking at what you have in your closet and building the looks from there.

  1. Put some thought into it: This year I had a good idea of the color and tones I wanted to be included in our family shoot.  I knew that I had to consider everyone that was included in the shoot.  Beyond my husband and kids, my parents, brother and father-in-law were going to be apart of this shoot. Consider what feel you want your images to have.  Do you want more timeless, vintage, dressy etc.  You can also start by getting inspiration online or even looking at what you have in your closet and building the looks from there.  For me, I started with the dress I recently received from Rent The Runway and built our looks from inspiration from Zara! I LOVE their kids section… and everything else of course! I think shopping at the same store makes planning easier.

2. Don’t Try To Match Everyone: I lean toward wanting to match everyone perfectly but have found that it is a lot more fun to bring in different patterns and textures as long as the color scheme coordinates. It’s also nice to allow others to have freedom in their choices with clothing.  I sent the extended family photos of what we were wearing and let them coordinate on their own accordingly.  I think it turned out pretty great! Rule: Coordinate don’t match!

3. Stay away from graphics! Kids love them and they are fun for everyday but can be extremely distracting in group photos.

4. Consider Comfortability: Make sure that everyone feels comfortable in what they are wearing.  If my husband, kids or even myself feels uncomfortable in the style or fit of my clothing the pictures will not turn out good! No one can really fake being comfortable.  After you have decided on what everyone is wearing, have everyone try on their outfits beforehand to ensure that they are comfortable and actually somewhat like what you have chosen!

5. Lay everything out and take a picture: Simple but a must-do to ensure everything you’ve chosen for the shoot goes together perfectly!

Your family photos turned out so cute, I love the dancing pic! Also, I completely agree on coordinating vs matching outfits. I recently took family photos for a friend and they all wore head to toe blue. it became more of a distraction in the photos.
